Mandatory training for diisocyanate workers

From 24 hoursth In August 2023, the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) restrictions on the use of diisocyanates introduced new minimum training requirements for workers working with diisocyanates and mixtures containing diisocyanates. We have already written to all customers about this requirement in advance. This blog post provides further background and links to information.

What are diisocyanates?

Diisocyanates are one of the commonly used components of polyurethane and are used in the manufacture of a wide range of products including furniture, footwear, insulation, vehicle parts, and construction materials.

Since 2016, industry and governments across Europe have been working to ensure best practices in health and safety and strengthen worker protection against the risks of working with these products.

This study concluded that mandatory training for all workers working with diisocyanates is the most appropriate and effective risk management measure. After a transition period, the training mandate came into effect on the 24th.th August 2023.

It is important to note that the final product (such as the cured roofing membrane) is virtually free of diisocyanates. Polyurethane products are made by reacting diisocyanates and polyols, but these chemicals are used up during the reaction. This risk applies only to workers using the product in its uncured state.

Which products contain diisocyanates?

This REACH limit for diisocyanates has been adopted because above certain exposure levels they can have health effects on workers, and this limit targets certain usage levels. This limit is directed to products containing more than 0.1% by weight of monomeric diisocyanates.

The following products offered by SIG Design & Technology contain diisocyanates.

  • IKO Tanetec BT
  • IKO Tanetec UV
  • IKO Tanetec Details
  • IKO Tanetec Finish
  • IKO Tanetech Quartz Binder
  • IKO Polymer UV
  • IKO adhesive
  • IKO Spray First IBA
  • IKO Spray First BMA
  • IKO Spray Fast FMA
  • IKO Spray Fast FMA
  • Signature Ultra Protect Waterproof Liquid
  • SIGNature Ultra Protect General Purpose Primer

As a potential handler of these products, SIG Design & Technology has a duty to inform its customers of the impact of these regulations. Product labels will be enforced from February 2022.

What does the contractor need to do?

PU roof with plants

If you purchase or use products containing greater than 0.1wt% monomeric diisocyanates, it is your responsibility to ensure that all users or handlers of these products within your organization are trained.

The law states that from August 24, 2023, the industrial or professional use of these products requires appropriate training. Industrial and professional handlers/users may continue to use the product provided they have been trained to control dermal and inhalation exposure by August 24, 2023.

If you or your employees plan to use products containing diisocyanates in the future, you should receive the necessary training beforehand.

Where can I get training on the safe use of diisocyanates?

Leaflet screenshot - A safe future for polyurethane productsFEICA (European Adhesives and Sealants Industry Association), in collaboration with several associations of the PU industry such as ISOPA and ALIPA, has launched a comprehensive training program to ensure the safe use of diisocyanates.

Training courses are offered at www.safeusediisosianates.eu Available as web-based training for individuals or groups.
